Dr. Daniel Mowrey, research adviser for the animal health division of Eli Lilly and Company, will present the 2006 Don Fox Memorial Lecture at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, in the Nebraskan Student Union Cedar Room at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Dr. Mowrey’s lecture, “The Field of Statistics: Its Role in Chemistry,” is free and open to the public. Dr. Mowrey earned a bachelor’s degree from Kearney State College/UNK in 1973. He later went on to receive both a master’s degree in mathematics in 1975 and a Ph.D. in statistics in 1980 from Iowa State University.
After graduating from Iowa State University, Dr. Mowrey worked at Eli Lilly and Company as a senior statistician in the animal health division. For more than 25 years, Dr. Mowrey has worked as a statistician for the company in the areas of analytical and organic chemistry, drug formulations, toxicology, basic discovery, and pre-clinical and clinical trials.
In addition, Dr. Mowrey has authored or co-authored 30 referred articles, 52 abstracts, two patents and given 28 conference presentations. He has also written and co-written more than 200 submissions to the Center of Veterinary Medicine, the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Dr. Mowrey’s work has helped lead to the approval of novel compounds for treatment of bovine and swine respiratory disease, as well as has enhanced the average daily gain and feed efficiency of beef cattle, swine and turkeys.
The forerunner to the Don Fox Lectureship was created in the fall of 1980, during the Kearney State College Diamond Jubilee celebration. The chemistry department organized the Donald E. Fox Symposium in honor of Dr. Don Fox, former chair of the chemistry department and dean of the College of Natural and Social Sciences.
The symposium led to the creation of the Don Fox Lectureship in 1981. Every year, the event features a distinguished KSC/UNK alumnus who speaks at the chemistry department banquet.
After the Don Fox Lectureship presentation, Dr. Mowrey will speak to chemistry classes at UNK on Monday, Oct. 30.
