SAXOPHONIST TO PERFORM A PUBLIC RECITAL AND TEACH A MASTERCLASS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY, MARCH 9 AND 10, AT UNK

One of the more versatile saxophonists today, Dr. Randall A. Smith will present a public recital and teach a masterclass Thursday and Friday, March 9 and 10, at University of Nebraska at Kearney.  
       
On Thursday (March 9), Dr. Smith will join UNK’s Dr. David Nabb for an alto saxophone duet. They will be accompanied by Marilyn Musick on piano. Dr. Smith will perform a series of solo selections on alto and soprano saxophone in addition to the duets. The recital, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.
    
Dr. Smith, who is a professor of music at Truman State University in Missouri, has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Puerto Rico. He teaches woodwind classes and music theory. Previous to teaching at Truman State, Dr. Smith was an associate professor at Indiana University, where he studied under Dr. Eugene Rousseau and was a member of the well-known Indiana Saxophone Quartet.
    
In addition to Dr. Rousseau, Dr. Smith’s saxophone mentors include David Green, Kenneth Fischer and Larry Teal.  
    
On Friday, Dr. Smith will teach a saxophone masterclass starting at 2:30 p.m. in Room 264 (the Band Room) of the Fine Arts Building. While performers for the masterclass have already been selected, anyone may attend the workshop. There is no charge to attend the masterclass.
    
College, high school and junior high saxophonists and their instructors are encouraged to attend, Dr. Nabb said. There is no charge to observe the masterclass. Parking permits for those wishing to attend the afternoon event are free and may be picked up from the music office in the Fine Arts Building.
