PI KAPPA ALPHA FRATERNITY

June Department of the Month

Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity is being recognized as the June Department of the Month.
Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at the University of Nebraska at Kearney raised $8,000 at the first annual Dr. Kent Estes Memorial Golf Tournament held Saturday, April 30th, at the Kearney Country Club. Approximately 140 players included chapter members, alumni, faculty, staff, administrators, parents, and community members.  The $8,000 will help establish two memorial scholarships in honor of Dr. Kent Estes, who taught in and chaired the UNK Department of Counseling and School Psychology for many years. After fighting a battle with cancer and then returning to the classroom last fall, Dr. Estes passed away in January.  All three of his sons, Eric, Aaron and Luke, are members of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

In addition to organizing this charity golf event, the men contributed over 7,984 hours of community service in the past school year.  They have donated time, material, and spirit to a number of different programs that have bettered not only the campus but the community of Kearney as well.  Activities included Relay for Life, Honey Sunday, Central Elementary School Spaghetti Feed, Buddy Bowling, Campus Move-In Day, Pike Haunted House for Charity, Campus Cleanup, a Fireman’s BBQ and much more.

The fraternity is described as having shown an overwhelming support for one another. They helped support a member through a personal loss, have helped one another achieve academic success, have fostered leadership skills amongst their members, have helped each member grow into excellent scholars, leaders, athletes, and gentlemen.  Congratulations to a fine group of gentleman from Staff Senate.
