The Rockin R Roundup for high school student writers will be held Friday, Sept. 17, in conjunction with the Nebraska Book Festival at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

The Department of English is hosting the day that will feature four writing workshops: Writing Poetry, Writing Fantasy/Science Fiction, Writing Family History and Interpreting Movies.

Featured speaker will be Gothenburg native and author Ron Block.  Block, who teaches creative writing in New Jersey, is the author of a collection of short stories called The Dirty Shame Hotel (winner of the Minnesota Voices Project from New Rivers Press), Dismal River (New Rivers Press) and Prairie Volcano (Dakotah Territory).

“The Roundup will not only give students a chance to study the work of a nationally known Nebraska writer, Ron Block, but to meet him, hear him speak about his stories and writing, and ask him questions,” said Dr. Susanne Bloomfield, director of the Nebraska Book Festival and UNK professor of English. “It will also give them an opportunity to participate in various writing workshops.”

The Nebraska Book Festival gives participants the opportunity to take part in presentations and discussions on major Nebraska writers, both classic and contemporary, all types of writing, many venues of publishing, and on organizing and revitalizing book clubs.
