For the ninth straight season, Nebraska-Kearney has won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s Wells Fargo Cup, signifying the top athletic program in the league.
UNK has been a member of the RMAC for nine years. Adams State (1993-95) is the only other school to win the trophy.
For the 2003-04 academic year, the Lopers won RMAC titles in wrestling, men’s tennis and women’s basketball. UNK was then runner-up in men’s basketball, men’s indoor track, women’s indoor track, women’s outdoor track and volleyball.
UNK amassed 730 points, 40 points ahead of runner up Metro State (Colo.) and 50 points more than third place Adams State (Colo.). Last year, UNK (785) and Metro (680) also finished first and second.
The Wells Fargo Cup is awarded to the school which accumulates the most points over the year based on its team’s outcome in the RMAC’s four “core” sports (football/men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, volleyball) along with four “wild card” sports.
Total points are calculated based on the teams various finishes in the various RMAC tournaments or post-season play in conjunction with the final conference regular season standings.
UNK will receive the Wells Fargo Cup during the RMAC Hall of Fame banquet on July 10 at the Colorado Springs Sheraton Hotel.
