UNK-133 Nebraska high school juniors and seniors were on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus Oct. 24 to take part in the annual Scholars Recognition Day. Students in the top five percent of their senior class and top three percent of their junior class were invited to UNK to take part in several activities and were formally recognized at a banquet that evening.
While on campus, the high school students were welcomed by Jim Roark, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and then were guests at a panel discussion led by Dr. Richard Jussel, director of the Honors Program. UNK honor students serving on that panel were Adam Jaworski of Hastings, Andrea Emken of Aurora, Travis Miller of Dix, Kara Meinke of Lincoln, Robert Rodriguez of Papillion, Liz Lawhorn of Muscatine, IA, and Tamy Burnett of Columbus served as moderator.
Students then attended specialized classroom presentations from various fields of study. Mini lectures exposed the students to a college classroom atmosphere. An organization fair rounded out the afternoon events where campus organizations were on-hand to answer questions and provide information about campus events and organizations.
The recognition banquet hosted by Chancellor Gladys Styles Johnston took place that evening. The featured keynote speaker was L. Dennis Smith, the President of the University of Nebraska.
