UNK– Each year the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus sets aside a special day for the families of UNK students. This year Family Day will be held on Saturday, September 30. The day will be filled with exciting activities, music, good food, athletic events, and opportunities to visit with UNK faculty and administration.
The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with registration at the Nebraskan Student Union. Families will have a choice to go to the UNK Band Day Parade in downtown Kearney or attend various workshops on campus. At 10 a.m. another round of workshops will begin on the UNK campus. At 10:30 a.m. each college will host a reception for families to get acquainted with the faculty and administration. At 11:15 a.m. there will be a family barbecue in the Union Courtyard with music by Jazz Quintet. Chancellor Gladys Styles Johnston will be the honored luncheon speaker and UNK’s Family of the Year will be introduced. The Loper Athletic Club will host a tailgate party to begin at 11:30 a.m. in the south end zone of Foster Field. Freewill donations will be accepted. The UNK Pride of the Plains Marching Band, directed by Dr. Neal Schnoor, will entertain the guests at a pre-game spectacular at 12:45 p.m. The UNK football team will play Colorado School of Mines at 1 p.m.
Families are invited to experience university life with dinner in the Commons, the campus cafeteria, from 4-7 p.m. Tickets for the noon luncheon and dinner are each. Tickets for the football game are available from the Athletic Department at (308) 865-8337.
Information for overnight accommodations can be obtained through the Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce at (308) 237-3101. Guests can also stay on campus for per bed, per night. A limited number of rooms are available, for further information or reservations, contact the Office of Residential and Greek Life at (308) 865-8519.
