UNK BAND DAY

UNK– University of Nebraska Kearney’s annual Band Day, a competition and parade featuring Nebraska High School bands, will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 30. The parade will begin at Railroad Street, follow Central Avenue north to 27th Street, then will turn west to the UNK campus.

Gary Davis, director of bands at UNK, organizes the event. Davis commented, “This is something we do because it is good for the participants. Bands come from all over the state to compete in this parade. Bands as large as over 200 and down to less than 20 will be competing. It is a great way to prepare for future parades they will compete in. Hopefully it’s the most educational parade in the state of Nebraska.”

The 38 competing bands will go through pre-parade inspection and also will be judged on their marching performances. Trophies will be presented to the winning bands at halftime of the UNK-Colorado School of Mines football game. The guest band, St. Paul High School band and the UNK band will perform a show during halftime. Davis added, “I hope people will come not only to see the results of the morning parade but also to watch the bands perform and cheer on the Lopers.”
