UNK TO HOST ADVENTURES IN CHEMISTRY CAMP

UNK-Thirty-two of the top high school chemistry students in Nebraska will participate in the University of Nebraska at Kearney Adventures in Chemistry Camp June 11-17 and July 30-August 5.

“High school science teachers nominated students in January,” said Dr. Christopher Exstrom, a co-director of the camps and UNK chemistry professor. Dr. Michael Mosher, UNK chemistry professor, also co-directs the camps.

During each week-long camp, students will work in small groups with UNK chemistry faculty on open-ended research projects. The students will learn college-level laboratory techniques and gain hands-on experience in chemistry research. Peer groups will explore current chemical issues and approaches. Field trips to local and regional laboratory facilities are also planned to acquaint students with careers in chemistry.

Mosher said he hopes that through this camp, students can learn that chemistry doesn’t have to be feared. Chemistry class was not a prerequisite for attending the camp.

“The most important thing I hope the students learn is the fact that chemistry, and science in general, is fun and that they can make a career out of it,” Mosher said.

The camps are part of the Summer Synergy 2000 offering s at UNK. Summer Synergy includes short-term classes and workshops, as well as selected special events and enrichment activities.
