Martin-Luther-King-Rotator KEARNEY – In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a candlelight vigil will take place at 7 p.m. in the Atrium of the Nebraskan Student Union on Monday (Jan. 19) at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

The vigil, free and open to the public, will highlight key figures who played important roles in the fight for civil rights for both African-Americans and Mexican-Americans. The event will also highlight people who continue to challenge civil rights.

Speakers will include Ralph Hanson, chair of the Communications Department, and Kevin Chaney, women’s basketball coach. Hanson will talk about the role media played in the Civil Rights Movement, and Chaney will discuss the role athletes played and continue to play.

The Ethnic Studies Program, Black Student Association and Office of Multicultural Affairs, Division of Student Affairs are sponsoring the event.
