KEARNEY – The Spirit Squad at the University of Nebraska at Kearney is bringing extra enthusiasm to halftime of a women’s basketball game with the help of an energetic group of youths.

dance team“How Sweet It Is,” the annual cheer and dance kids camp at UNK, is Jan. 24.

The camp, hosted annually by the UNK Sapphires Dance Team and UNK Cheerleading Squad, includes a cheer and dance clinic from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Cushing Coliseum. Participants will also perform during halftime of that evening’s Loper women’s basketball game.

The camp is for ages 4 through 11 and costs $25. Participants receive a goodie bag and two additional tickets to the game.

“With so many kids at the camp, their parents and grandparents who come to watch will help boost attendance at the game. It also gives fans something new and different for a halftime show,” said Heather Wolf, Spirit Squad adviser.

“I have had multiple people who have told me that their daughters started coming at age 4 and have continued coming all the way to fifth grade, so people seem to really enjoy it,” she said.

“The cheer squad and dance team love what they do,” Wolf said. “They have a passion to share it with younger girls and have an impact on that demographic.”
