WHAT: Brown Bag Lecture Series

HOSTED BY: UNK Department of History

TITLE: “Civil War Memory and Celebration in Kearney”

TOPIC: Founded less than a decade after the Civil War, veterans flocked to Kearney seeking opportunity. Annual remembrances and celebrations of local Civil War veterans continued through the early 1900s. This talk will explore the history of Kearney’s Civil War celebrations and veterans’ events, including the enormous 1888 Grand Army of the Republic reunion. It will also highlight later commemorations, such as the dedication of the city’s familiar Civil War monument in 1910.

PRESENTER: John Klintworth graduated from Medicine Valley Public Schools and earned a bachelor’s degree from Chadron State College, majoring in history with a minor in legal studies. He’ll graduate from UNK this month with a master’s degree in public history.
