Nature has always felt like home for Olivia Brummet.
Camping, fishing and exploring wildlife aren’t just pastimes, they’re foundational experiences that shaped who she is and ultimately guided her future.
“I’ve always had a strong interest in the outdoors and recreation,” she says. “That connection to nature has stayed with me into adulthood, and it’s what inspired me to pursue a degree in recreation, outdoor and event management. I’ve always known I wanted to build a career doing something I’m passionate about, and this field allows me to combine my love for the outdoors with meaningful, hands-on work that benefits communities and encourages others to connect with nature, as well.”
A Central City native, Brummet graduates from the University of Nebraska at Kearney this week, earning a bachelor’s degree in recreation, outdoor and event management with an emphasis in natural resource management and outdoor pursuits.
The UNK program stands out, she says, because of its close-knit, supportive environment. Students progress through their coursework together, developing strong connections with each other and the faculty.
“There’s a real sense of community, where everyone gets to know each other and supports one another,” she says. “It allows you to build lasting relationships – both personally and professionally – that continue well beyond graduation.”
This sense of community extends beyond the classroom. Brummet took full advantage of experiential learning opportunities, from an outdoor adventure class that included backpacking and camping to her internship in Texas training athletes through Dynamic Athlete Builders. She was also involved in a variety of campus organizations, including the Fish and Wildlife Society, SpRec Club and UNK Art Society.
A glassblowing class during her freshman year sparked another passion, which turned into her 3D studio art minor and led her to found the UNK Glass Club. Through the UNK Department of Art and Design, she was able to take a summer course at the world-famous Pilchuck Glass School in Washington.
Though seemingly unrelated to her major, Brummet sees art as a creative extension of her relationship with the natural world.
“Before discovering glass, I never really considered myself artistic,” she says. “But the support, encouragement and passion within the program helped me find confidence and develop my identity as an artist. It’s been an incredibly meaningful part of my journey and has given me a whole new way to connect with nature and creativity.”
Now preparing for a job as a livestock manager at a multigenerational family farm, Brummet is ready to take the skills and experiences she gained at UNK and apply them in a way that keeps her connected to the land.
“I’m excited to take on a leadership role and apply what I’ve learned throughout my degree in a practical, meaningful way.”
As commencement day nears, what does this moment mean to you?
Graduation is a deeply meaningful moment for me, especially as a first-generation college graduate. It represents not only the hard work and dedication I’ve put into my education, but also the progress and possibilities that exist beyond what those before me may have had access to. It’s a reminder that we are capable of achieving more, of breaking cycles, and of paving new paths for ourselves and for future generations. This milestone is both a personal accomplishment and a celebration of resilience and growth.
How did UNK help prepare you for your career?
UNK has played a major role in preparing me for my career. Through hands-on coursework, supportive faculty and real-world experiences like internships and field-based classes, I gained both the knowledge and the confidence I need to succeed in a professional setting. The recreation, outdoor and event management program gave me a strong foundation in leadership, planning and problem-solving, while my involvement in the studio art program taught me creativity, patience and self-expression. Overall, UNK helped shape me into a well-rounded, adaptable professional ready to take on new challenges.
What’s your favorite thing about UNK?
The strong sense of community on campus. Everyone is incredibly friendly and supportive, and there’s a real willingness to help one another succeed. Whether it’s through academics, clubs or campus events, there’s truly something for everyone. It’s the kind of environment where you feel like you belong, and that makes a big difference in both your personal and academic growth.
Who was the most influential person during your undergraduate career?
My sister. She always had unwavering faith in me and continuously pushed me to be a better student and a better person. Her support meant everything. She challenged me academically, encouraged me to pursue my passions and reminded me of my potential even when I doubted myself. Her belief in me made a lasting impact on my journey, and I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without her.
What was your favorite class?
One of my favorite classes was Outdoor Adventure. We had the opportunity to go backpacking and camping, which made it such a unique and memorable experience. It wasn’t just about learning outdoor skills – it was about building teamwork, pushing your comfort zone and creating strong connections with classmates in a setting very different from a traditional classroom. It really captured what I love about my field of study.
If you could go back in time and do something differently, what would it be?
I would make more of an effort to step outside my comfort zone. I would challenge myself to talk to more people, get involved in more organizations and take advantage of every opportunity to connect and grow. While I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished, I’ve learned that some of the most valuable experiences come from putting yourself out there and embracing the unknown.
What advice do you have for current and future Lopers?
Don’t be afraid to change your major if you’re not happy. It’s completely OK if it takes multiple tries to figure out what you’re truly passionate about. Finding the right path takes time, and your college experience is the perfect opportunity to explore different interests. UNK offers such a wide range of programs and opportunities, there’s truly something for everyone. Trust yourself, stay open to change and know that it’s never too late to pursue what excites you.
