Susan Pedersen, assistant nursing director and clinic nurse for UNK Student Health, received the University of Nebraska Board of Regents KUDOS award during Friday’s meeting.
KUDOS awards recognize university staff for their professional expertise, service and “superior dedication” to UNK and the University of Nebraska. It is the university’s top staff award.
A lifelong Nebraskan, Pedersen was born in Lincoln and raised in Kearney. She has more than 40 years of nursing experience, working in fields such as hospital medical units, mental health, orthopedics, urology and immunization clinics. In 1997, she joined UNK Student Health, where she has dedicated her expertise to serving students, faculty and staff.
“I never saw myself working in Student Health when I was a young nurse, but fell in love with it from the very beginning,” Pedersen says. “I love our students and love serving them.”
UNK political science professor Peter Longo shared these comments: “Sue’s care demonstrates a high degree of competency and empathy, earning many praiseworthy comments from students. On a personal note, she was a lifesaver for me when I experienced a major artery burst on April 29 while preparing for class. Her swift diagnosis and prompt referral to the ER were crucial to my recovery. We are fortunate to have her gifted presence on our campus. She truly is saving lives every day.”
Beyond her professional contributions, Pedersen is actively involved in the Kearney community through organizations such as Loper Cats, Kearney Rescue Cats, Boy Scouts of America, Habitat for Humanity and her church. Her passion for nature is reflected in her hobbies, which include birdwatching, maintaining a local bluebird trail, running and gardening. She also enjoys hiking and training their two dogs for competitive events with her husband Ken.
