As a part of Alcohol Awareness Week at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, there will be a mock accident scene staged in the circle drive between Thomas Hall and Bruner Hall of Science over the noon hour Tuesday (Oct. 30).

Members of campus, local and area law enforcement agencies, Kearney Fire Department and Good Samaritan Hospital emergency unit crews will be accessing the location during that time. In addition, UNK Counseling and Health Care will have counselors on scene. Vehicles are being provided by Anderson Wrecking of Kearney. UNK theatre department faculty and students will be preparing “victims” for their part in presenting the mock accident scene.

The event is being sponsored by members of Loper Programming and Activities Council (LPAC). The student organizers have put informational posters up in buildings across campus to let the campus know that the event will be taking place. LPAC students are also working with Peer Health members, who are sponsoring OkSOBERfest on Wednesday.

LPAC members Brittany Wright, a UNK exercise science major from Fowler, Colo., and Miranda Coffey, an exercise science/pre-physical therapy major from Friend, are co-chairs for the LPAC mock accident event. The two have been planning and organizing the event for the past year.

Wright said that she had been involved in mock accident events as a high school student and at a former campus.

“We believe it is important to have an event that causes a lasting impression on the student body related to drinking and driving,” she said.

Coffey said, “I didn’t realize what all it took (to put together the event).”

The two have enlisted a number of students to serve as “victims” and in other roles. They include: Coffey, Wright, Pierrie Jefferson of Lincoln, Chelsea Svoboda of McCook, Sarah Vandeveinter of Omaha and Desiree Earnest of Seward.
