Dr. John I. Goodlad will deliver the University of Nebraska at Kearney spring commencement address entitled “In Praise of Civic Virtue” on Friday, May 4, at the Health and Sports Center. Commencement ceremonies begin at 10 a.m.
Goodlad will address 637 spring graduates, 525 students will receive bachelor degrees and 112 will receive their master’s degrees. Eighty additional students will participate in the spring commencement ceremony that plan to earn their degrees during the summer session. There is not a separate summer commencement ceremony.
Dr. John Goodlad has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in education in Canada and the United States. From his teaching assignment in a one-room, eighth-grade school in British Colombia to those of professor of education at Emory University, the University of Chicago, the University of Los Angeles, and the University of Washington, Professor Goodlad has made a profound impact on the educational scene. Dr. Goodlad is professor emeritus at the University of Washington. He continues his active involvement through his service as director of the Center for Educational Renewal and as president of the Institute for Educational Inquiry.
Dr. Goodlad will receive a Distinguished Service Award during the commencement ceremony.
UNK Chancellor Gladys Styles Johnston will give the commencement welcome and Regent Don Blank of McCook will give the greetings on behalf of the University Board of Regents of Nebraska. Alumni President Lori Waters of Lincoln will extend greetings on behalf of the alumni association.
Also addressing the graduates will be UNK graduating senior Clayton Thyne of Julesburg, Colorado, giving the Senior Class Response. Tiffany Redel of Bennington and Andres Traslavina of Omaha will give the invocation and benediction, respectively. Leia Edwards of Lincoln will sing the national anthem and will lead the singing of the alma mater. Amber Gloystein of Kearney will give the Senior Class Response at the Honors Convocation.
Special music will be provided by the UNK Wind Ensemble, directed by Gary Davis, and the Choraleers under the direction of David Bauer.
