Dr. Michael Mosher, Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, was awarded a $50,000 grant to research chemical compounds that may have applications to Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s chorea, tardive dyskinesia, and other human ailments.

The grant comes from the Petroleum Research Fund, a highly prestigious grant program operated by the American Chemical Society in Washington, D.C.

The research project will involve undergraduate students in the preparation of small molecules that have potential as therapeutically useful compounds. Together with the Principal Investigator, the undergraduate students will be exposed to modern techniques in organic chemistry. This experience is a tremendous addition to their education at UNK, allowing them to apply knowledge gained in coursework while involving them in original research. This project will benefit students as they prepare for graduate study and careers in science.

“This grant shows how UNK combines meaningful research with undergraduate education,” said Chancellor Doug Kristensen. “Our faculty can compete with the best of their peers on a national level.”

The research project will provide some basic understanding of the role of palladium metal as a catalyst in organic research will be published in major international journals.
