Poet Major Jackson will present Leaving Saturn: Poems at the University of Nebraska at Kearney Reynolds Writers & Readers Series Friday, Nov. 19, at 8 p.m. at the Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA).

Leaving Saturn is Jackson’s first collection of poetry and was nominated in 2003 for a National Book Critics Circle Award.  His poems have appeared in the American Poetry Review, Boulevard, Callaloo and The New Yorker, among other journals.

According to Charles Fort, director of the series and professor of English at UNK, the series, which is presented at MONA, allows people to become acquainted with the visual and literary arts.

“People can learn about the writer’s works, ask questions about the writer’s creative process and the writer’s life,” Fort said.

Jackson is an assistant professor of English at the University of Vermont and is one of two U.S. poets to receive a Library of Congress Witter Bynner Fellowship in 2003.

The Reynolds Writers & Readers Series was founded in 1998 and has brought more than 60 writers from around the world to UNK, including Pulitzer Prize winners, National Book Award finalists and then-future Poet Laureate Ted Kooser.

The series is free and open to the public. Each reading begins at 8 p.m. with a book signing and reception following. For more information contact Charles Fort at (308) 865-8164.
