Princeton University computer science chair Dr. Larry Peterson will present PlanetLab: A Platform for Introducing Disruptive Technology into the Internet from 3-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, in Otto Olsen Room 112 at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Dr. Peterson, a professor at Princeton University and a 1979 Kearney State College/UNK graduate, will present on PlanetLab and its plan, which is to design a more capable Internet for the future. A Kearney native, Dr. Peterson is one of four graduates who will receive a Distinguished Alumni Award from the UNK Alumni Association as part of 2004 Homecoming activities on the campus.
“The Web is so successful and so many people depend on it, it’s become impossible to go to the core of the Internet and make radical changes to introduce the kind of new services we see people wanting to deploy,” said Dr. Peterson, director of the PlanetLab Consortium.
The project, hosted by Princeton University, is an effort currently made up of 60 different academic institutions with 160 machines at 65 sites around the globe. According to organizers, the goal is to make it so that educational organizations and private enterprise can build applications for the next generation of the Internet without bringing down the current system.
