Approximately 100 fourth grade students from four area elementary schools will learn about career options and the importance of college during Early Awareness Day on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
“The program is designed to create awareness about the importance of attending college, considering various career options and the enriching experience of campus life,” said Ingrid Rodriguez, UNK Office of Financial Aid peer adviser.
Early Awareness Day, now in its 19th year, will bring fourth grade students from Amherst, Axtell, Elm Creek and Pleasanton.
“The students will have the opportunity to tour the campus, visit various departments and eat lunch at the Nebraskan Student Union,” Rodriguez said. “In each session, faculty and staff will give the students an idea of what their department does and some ideas of career options in those majors.”
Students will begin the day in the Fine Arts Recital Hall, where they will be welcomed by Darrell Morris, UNK football coach. The students will then be divided into four groups according to school.
“Each group will attend four 30-minute sessions on a rotation basis so that each group will have the opportunity to participate in the same sessions,” Rodriguez said. “They will also have two 40-minute activities, one in the morning and on in the afternoon.”
Sessions will include a geography activity, visiting the theatre department, learning about early college preparation and a showing at the planetarium.
