UNK- New techniques for teaching daycare and pre-school children through the arts will be the focus of a one-day workshop this July at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Gary Dulabaum, a former kindergarten teacher and nationally recognized speaker and workshop presenter, will present the one-day workshop on Saturday, July 15. The program will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Ockinga Conference Room on the UNK campus. The cost is $25 for the full day. Participants can earn up to six clock hours of in-service credit. Written documentation will be available.
“Gary is a unique and talented individual who will make this an exceptional learning experience for participants,” said Julie Agard, UNK assistant professor of elementary education. Dulabaum will demonstrate how participants can integrate the arts into everyday preschool programs.
“Gary recognizes that children come to daycare and pre-school from a variety of ethnic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds, which can present a challenge for their caregivers and teachers,” Agard said. The program teaches that children can find expression for their thoughts, values, ideas and feelings through the arts.
“This workshop will demonstrate that an effective program does not need to be costly or require extensive training,” she added.
The program is a hands-on workshop where participants will learn techniques through creatively listening, expressing and sharing. Participants should be ready to sing, move and have fun; however, no musical experience is required. The workshop also includes excellent handouts containing developmentally appropriate activities.
