UNK- Deborah Schroeder, University of Nebraska at Kearney interim director of computer services, has been named assistant vice chancellor for information technology at UNK. Her appointment will be effective July 1 pending the approval of the Board of Regents at their June 17 meeting.
In her new administrative position at UNK, Schroeder will be responsible for planning and managing the development of the computer infrastructure for the entire university. These duties are in addition to her supervision of daily operation of the network, application development services, and client responsibilities.
Chancellor Gladys Styles Johnston noted that Schroeder’s dedication and service to the university make her an excellent candidate for this position.
“Deborah Schroeder brings to the position of assistant vice chancellor for information technology an exemplary work ethic, a proven record of strong leadership and management skills, and an enduring commitment to teamwork in the service of broad institutional objectives and priorities,” Johnston said. “I look forward to working closely with her as a key member of my administrative team.”
Schroeder earned a bachelor of science in education degree and a masters of business administration degree from UNK. She then served as a UNK computer programmer from 1978 to 1981, and became an instructor of computer science from 1981 to 1982. From 1982 to 1990, she worked as lead programmer and analyst for computer services. She then became assistant director of computer services, and has been interim director of that department since 1997.
During her years of service at the university, she created UNK’s first online registration program in the early 1980s, and also managed the project of wiring all of the UNK residence halls for Internet access during the summer of 1999.
Chancellor Johnston also noted that Schroeder’s leadership role will become even more substantial as inter-campus planning and collaboration expands.
Schroeder is the daughter of Herb and Velma Freeburg of Shelton, Neb.
