UNK – Approximately 80 fourth grade students from four area elementary schools will learn about the career opportunities and campus life during Early Awareness Day tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 14) on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus.
Early Awareness Day, now in its 18th year, will bring fourth grade students from Amherst, Axtell, Elm Creek and Pleasanton. The students will tour the campus, take part in various departmental demonstrations and have lunch in the Nebraskan Student Union.
According to Anne McConkey, UNK Early Awareness coordinator, the program is designed to create awareness about the importance of attending college, considering various career options and the enriching experience of campus life.
The students will begin their day at 9 a.m. in the Miriam Drake Theatre where they will be welcomed to campus by Darrell Morris, UNK football coach. From there, the students will be divided into four groups, and each group will attend four, 30-minute sessions on a rotation basis, which will give each group an opportunity to participate in all of the sessions.
“They will also have two, 40-minute activities, one in the morning and one in the afternoon,” McConkey said. “Sessions will include a geography activity, a visit to the theatre department, a fun activity to learn about being independent at college and a show at our brand new planetarium.”
