UNK– University of Nebraska at Kearney social sorority Alpha Omicron Pi recently pledged six women into their chapter through spring recruitment.
Spring recruitment, also known as continuous open recruitment (COR), is considered to be a more relaxed form of recruitment, according to Sarah Abels of Kearney, Panhellenic vice president of Recruitment/Membership.
“I believe this year the results of COR was better than average,” Abels said. “We have tried some new techniques to get the word out to interested students. For example, last week we had Greek Fest. During those three days, we set up booths around campus and handed out information about Greek life and a sign-up sheet for anyone who was interested.”
Alpha Omicron Pi currently has more than 100 chapters in the United States and Canada. Last summer, the UNK chapter received three international chapter awards at the 2009 Alpha Omicron Pi International Convention held in Tampa, Fla.
Each spring, the sorority hosts their annual “Strike Out Arthritis” dodgeball tournament. Funds raised go to the sorority’s national philanthropy, the Alpha Omicron Pi Arthritis Foundation. The foundation awards research grants and scholarships to families with children who have juvenile arthritis.
UNK has a total of 12 Greek organizations–five sororities and seven fraternities.
