Japanese Festival bringing summer food and fun to UNK

KEARNEY – Experience the sights, sounds and flavors of a traditional Japanese summer festival during an upcoming community event.

The annual Japanese Festival is scheduled for Feb. 15 on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus. Doors open at 5 p.m., with the event beginning at 5:45 p.m. in the Nebraskan Student Union Ponderosa Room. Admission is free.

This year’s theme, “Summer in Japan,” reflects the season’s vibrant festival culture. Guests can enjoy live music and dance performances, interactive quizzes and booths featuring games commonly found at Japanese summer festivals.

Attendees will also have the chance to sample popular foods, including okonomiyaki (savory pancake), yakisoba (stir-fried noodle dish), pickled cucumbers and warabi mochi (traditional dessert) – staples often enjoyed at outdoor festivals across Japan.

“We chose Japanese summer as this year’s theme because it’s a busy time for festivals in Japan, and we wanted everyone in Kearney to experience that vibe,” said Ayato Shirasaka, a sophomore from Tokyo and president of the Japanese Association at Kearney. “This is a great opportunity to learn about and enjoy Japanese culture.”

Organized by the Japanese Association at Kearney, the festival is marking its 25th year. Typically drawing hundreds of attendees, it remains one of UNK’s most popular international celebrations.
