The concert, which features the orchestra’s brass and percussion, woodwind and string ensembles, will be livestreamed at unk.edu/music. It’s free and available to the public. There won’t be an in-person audience.

Alison Gaines, the orchestra’s conductor and director, is excited about the virtual performance.

“The challenges of rehearsing and performing in this time of COVID have allowed us to explore orchestral works by ‘family.’ You will recognize several familiar works and be introduced to new selections you are sure to enjoy,” said Gaines, an assistant music professor and Ronald J. Crocker Chair of Orchestra at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

The “Holiday Kickoff Concert” includes selections from Mozart, Beethoven and Bach, as well as Edward Elgar, Jeremiah Clarke, Peter Warlock and Scott Joplin.

Kearney Symphony Orchestra is comprised of UNK faculty and students and instrumentalists from communities across the region. Guest performers for the concert are UNK lecturer Franziska Brech (flute soloist) and members of the First Lutheran Church bell choir.
