Friday Waste Audit using dumpster dive to encourage recycling

KEARNEY – Students at University of Nebraska at Kearney will go “dumpster-diving” at an event Friday (April 17) to raise awareness about and encourage recycling.

The third annual Waste Audit Dumpster Dive begins at 2 p.m. at the Central Utilities Plant.

Organized by the UNK Sustainability Committee, student groups including Residence Hall Association, Enactus and Honors Program will don “hazmat” suits and sort through loads of the university’s trash to identify how much was tossed into waste cans that could have been recycled: paper, cups, glass or anything that could be recycled.

The items will then be weighed and taken to Kearney Area Recycling Center.
