Kearney, Neb., April 9, 2013 – Throughout today University of Nebraska at Kearney facilities professionals and private contractors have assessed damage caused during the late night/early morning thunderstorm. Winds severely damaged the roof to Calvin T. Ryan Library and the Fine Arts Building.

Barbara Johnson, vice chancellor for business and finance, provided the following update:

  • The library will remain closed on Wednesday, April 10, reopening on Thursday, April 11. The library faculty and staff remind students, faculty and staff that the website is available 24/7 for access to materials. Staff are asked to report for work on April 10
  • The Mitchell Center (adjacent to the library) will also remain closed at least until Thursday.
  • No rehearsals will be held on the theater stage at the Fine Arts Building until further notice.
  • Tonight’s presentation of Step Afrika! will go on as scheduled. (8 p.m., Health and Sports Center). Crews have cleared walkways and the performers have arrived safely in Kearney.

Johnson said the weather has made it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage, including structural engineering.

“I am appreciative of the work of the many staff and contractors today that assisted in cleaning the campus and surrounding areas of debris to make it safer for our students, faculty and staff to remain on campus,” Johnson said.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
