“Whose Coin is This? Reflections on Marriage as a Natural, Political and Religious Institution” will be the focus of a presentation Thursday, Jan. 24, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Dr. Gene Fendt, the Albertus Magnus Chair in Philosophy at UNK, will give the presentation at 7:30 p.m. in Copeland Hall, Room 142. The presentation is free and open to the public.

“By presenting these three pictures, or frameworks, of how to look at the issue,” he said, “we will at least become more aware of the depth of difficulty any proposed solution would have to overcome. Though some ideas in the talk will be taken from philosopher John Locke’s ‘Second Treatise on Government’ and  Plato’s ‘Republic,’ as well as a contemporary writer, the talk will be oriented to a non-scholarly audience.

“I thought it (the presentation) might encourage some civic discussion on the issues,” he said, noting that he will be showing how older philosophical reasoning still applies to modern problems.

“Since the supreme court has decided to take up the issue this term, I thought this might be a good time for a presentation,” he said.
