On Friday, Feb. 11, Bryce Speed will present a 6 p.m. artist talk about his drawings currently on exhibit in the University of Nebraska at Kearney Walker Art Gallery. The artist talk will be in Room 312 of the Fine Arts Building. The presentation and reception are free and open to the public.

UNK– Artist Bryce Speed is presenting a collection of his drawings in the University of Nebraska at Kearney Walker Art Gallery.

In the exhibit, titled “Beyond Closed Doors,” Speed’s drawings use architectural forms such as chairs, beds and buildings.

“My work can be described formally as atmospheric and architectural,” he said. “In my drawings, architectural forms reference both the stability and instability of identity.” The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will be up now through Feb. 11.

According to John Fronczak, UNK Walker Art Gallery director, Speed leaves much interpretation up to the viewer. “Each drawing is an invitation to create narratives,” he said.

Speed holds a BFA in painting from the University of Mississippi and an MFA in painting from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He has taught at the University of Alabama, University of Nebraska at Omaha, Metropolitan Community College in Omaha and at the Ozarks Technical Community College in Springfield, Mo. His work is represented by Modern Arts Midwest and the Lowe Gallery in Atlanta, Ga. Currently, he teaches art at Central Community College in Columbus.

Speed, whose work has been included in more than 40 exhibitions in several states, first earned international recognition in 2007 when his work “Double Beds” was selected for inclusion in the yearly international publication of the London International Creative Competition. In 2006, Speed exhibited at Space 301 in Mobile, Ala., and had his work selected for publication in Volume 64 of “New American Painting.” Also in 2006, he exhibited at Space 301 in Mobile, Ala., and at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City, where he completed a six-week artist-in-residency program.

On Friday, Feb. 11, there will be an artist talk and reception at 6 p.m. The  Walker Art Gallery, located in the UNK Fine Arts Building, is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
