More than 70 Fourth Grade Students to Attend Early Awareness Day Thursday (Oct. 15) at UNK

More than 70 area fourth grade students will attend the 16th annual Early Awareness Day on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus on Thursday, Oct. 15.

The event, which is scheduled from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m., will include fourth grade students from Amherst, Axtell, Elm Creek and Pleasanton.

“The program is designed to create awareness about the importance of attending college, considering various career options and the enriching experience of campus life,” said Early Awareness coordinator Anne McConkey. The students will tour the campus, visit various departments and have lunch in the Nebraskan Student Union.

“In years past, this event has been held in the spring,” McConkey said. “This year we’re moving Early Awareness to the fall to better accommodate schedules of the participants.”

The event will begin in the Miriam Drake Theatre where students will be welcomed to the campus by both UNK Chancellor Doug Kristensen and UNK head football coach Darrell Morris.

Later, the students will be divided into four groups based on their respective schools. During the day, each group will attend four 30-minute sessions and two 40-minute activities. Sessions will include a geography activity, a chemistry magic show, a visit to the theatre department and an activity to learn about being independent at college.
