High school students and teachers from more than 10 schools will have an opportunity to view demonstrations, participate in experiments and learn about career opportunities in information technology at the Information Technology Forum set for Wednesday, Nov. 29, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Sponsored jointly by Educational Service Unit #10 and UNK programs in computer science, management information systems and telecommunications management, the forum begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Nebraskan Student Union Ponderosa Room.

After a welcome address by UNK Chancellor Doug Kristensen, the keynote speaker for the event, Dan Schmit, will give a presentation. Schmit is an instructional technology specialist at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln.

After Schmit’s presentation, a podcasting competition will take place. Participating teams and schools will be given two-and-one-half hours to create a Podcast based on a topic provided. Students will have to construct a storyboard, conduct interviews and produce the podcast to complete the challenge. Winners will be announced at a 2 p.m. award ceremony.

In addition to hearing presentations and learning how to produce a podcast, students will have an opportunity to tour academic departments that offer information technology programs. While the students take the tour, high school teachers will attend a special session titled “Preparing the high school student for information technology careers.”
