Mary Sommers, financial aid director at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, recently received the Bob Minturn Special Recognition Award at the Nebraska Association of Student Financial Aid (NeASFAA) spring conference on April 11. The award is given annually to an outstanding financial aid officer who is a NeASFAA member in recognition of their leadership activities within the financial aid profession.

“Mary has served on many committees over the years and is always willing to jump in and do whatever is needed to get the job done. She does all of this and manages to keep the interest of her students her top priority. She is a true financial aid professional and is very deserving of this award,” Paula Kohles, assistant director of financial aid at Creighton University, said. Kohles nominated Sommers for this award.

Sommers has served as NeASFAA president and is currently the RMASFAA president-elect. She has served as a Neophyte instructor at RMASFAA Summer Institute and has been a facilitator and a trainer at numerous NeASFAA conferences and training sessions. This is the second time someone from UNK has received this award since it began in 1973.

NeASFAA established the Robert Minturn Service Award in 1973 in memory of Robert Minturn who served as Director of Financial Aid at Creighton University from January 1971 to August 1972. The Executive Council changed the award name to the “Bob Minturn Special Recognition Award” in 1981.
