University of Nebraska at Kearney Chancellor Doug Kristensen today announced the closing of the UNK campus for the remainder of the week.
Citing electrical power issues and the effects of the ice storm in the region, Chancellor Kristensen said, “We want to be good neighbors to the city and the region.”
“In cooperation with Nebraska Public Power District and the City of Kearney, we are asking people to avoid the campus, since most buildings have no electrical power, he said. “This is being done to conserve power for the city and surrounding areas, and to allow NPPD time for repairs.” The campus closure includes the Child Development Center.
Residence halls, which were scheduled to reopen on Friday for the beginning of second semester will not reopen until noon on Saturday, Jan. 6. Spring semester classes are scheduled to begin on Monday, Jan. 8.
“We want to notify students across the state that we don’t want them on campus until Saturday noon,” Chancellor Kristensen said. “We have a large number of students in Lincoln and Omaha who may not know the conditions in this area.
“There are a large number of trees down, and sidewalks and parking lots are all ice covered,” he added.
Residence halls will open at noon on Saturday and food service will be available at that time.
Essential employees may be contacted to come in during this closed down period to help with the reopening of the campus, Chancellor Kristensen noted.
