In honor of the institution’s 100 years of service, the University of Nebraska at Kearney will dedicate the Centennial Plaza, which is located east of the UNK Fine Arts building, at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29.
The Centennial Plaza, designed by the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, is to serve as a lasting tribute to the 100th anniversary of the institution. Comprised of a winding sidewalk entrance to the Hostetler Amphitheatre and seating walls, the plaza will also include numerous plantings and trees.
“The latter are intended to eventually shade the Hostetler during the afternoon hours and to add to the pleasant campus atmosphere,” said Dr. Ken Nikels, chair of the Centennial Celebration Committee.
Contributions from campus, community and alums are still being accepted, and the Centennial Celebration Committee invites individuals, campus groups, organizations and the community to contribute to the plaza project, Dr. Nikels said.
Those who donate to the plaza at Gold ($500 or more), Silver ($300-$499) and Bronze ($100-$299) levels will be recognized with bronze plaques, which will be placed in the plaza at a later date.
“Donations received by Oct. 15 will be identified with plaques,” Dr. Nikels said.
