Creating a more compassionate, moral, and inclusive society will be highlighted by three national speakers at the Third Annual Child Welfare Conference at the University of Nebraska at Kearney this month.
Ethical practice with children and families is the theme of the conference, which will take place Friday, April 15, at the Nebraskan Student Union Ponderosa Room.
“The topics of the conference will benefit anyone with interest in human services fields,” said Dr. DeLong Hamilton, assistant professor in the UNK Department of Social Work.
This year the keynote speaker will be Dr. Sophia Dziegielewski (jingle-les-key), a professor and the editor of the Journal of Social Service Research in the School of Social Work at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Dziegielewski will present “Ethical Standards of Care: Being Held to a Jury of Our Peers” from 8:30 a.m.-noon.
In the afternoon, Dr. Debra Anderson, director of Training and Education at Project Harmony in Omaha, will present “Fad or Fit? Trauma-informed Treatments for Maltreated Children.” Dr. Anderson has conducted training for more than 15,000 students and professionals at regional, national, and international conferences.
From 2:30- 4 p.m. national speaker Ryan Sallans of Omaha will present “Diversity Among LGBTQ Youth: Needs, Trends, and Our Society.” Sallans has worked in education and training for 12 years. His focus is on issues in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) community, eating disorders and body image for all populations.
Department recognitions and the Friend of Social Work Award presentation will follow from 4-4:45 p.m.
Cost for professionals attending is $80 in advance and $90 the day of the conference. Admission for UNK students, UNK field supervisors and Social Work Department Advisory Committee members is free. Full day attendance of the conference includes 5.5 CEU’s including 3 CEU’s for ethics.
