FORMER FBI HEAD FIELD PROFILER CANDICE DELONG TO SPEAK MONDAY, MARCH 26, AT UNK

Dr. Kim Carlson
Associate professor of Biology, 308.865.1554

Former FBI agent and a “real-life Clarice Starling,” Candice DeLong will speak at the University of Nebraska at Kearney on Monday, March 26, as a part of Women’s History Month.

DeLong has been on the front lines for high profile cases including the manhunt for the Unabomber and the 1982 Tylenol poisonings. She has tailed terrorists, gone undercover as a gangster’s moll and posed as the madam for a call-girl ring.

On Monday (March 26), she will give a presentation at 6 p.m. in Copeland Hall, Room 142. The presentation is free and open to the public. She will share her experiences as an FBI agent, and talk about the ways science is used in her field of work.

A book signing with DeLong will be held after the lecture, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Her book, “Special Agent: My Life on the Front Lines as a Woman in the FBI” will be available for purchase.

“She is an icon in FBI profiling, and she started her career as a psychiatric nurse,” said Dr. Kimberly Carlson, UNK associate professor of biology. “We thought it would have a great appeal to the general public, and we wanted to bring in a woman since it is Women’s History Month.” DeLong will also speak at the Sigma Xi Annual Alumni Banquet, which is open to Sigma Xi and invited guests only.

In addition, she will speak on “Presenting to Diverse Academic Audiences” at 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 26, for a Center for Teaching Excellence luncheon. The luncheon is open to UNK faculty only.

The former head field profiler for the F.B.I. in San Francisco retired in July of 2000. Before retiring she served as the liaison to the Bureau’s Behavioral Science Unit in Quantico and as a member of the Child Abduction Task Force. As a former registered nurse, she has lectured on issues including protecting women and children, and preventing sexual abuse.

After her retirement, DeLong released her book, “Special Agent: My Life on the Front Lines as a Woman in the F.B.I.” In the book, she takes readers step-by-step through the profiling process and tells how she helped to solve a number of difficult, high profile cases. She discusses her role as a lead investigator on the Tylenol murder case, and her experience with the investigation that led to the arrest of the Unabomber. She shares information that the media has not released.

Alongside Dr. Janis Amatuzio, DeLong hosts the Discovery Investigation Channel television show “Deadly Women.” The show tells the stories of history’s most intriguing female killers by profiling four famous cases in each episode.

She previously had a reality television series on the Lifetime Channel called “What Should I Do?” which discussed the best way for people to protect and prepare themselves for emergency situations. She is also the subject of the Lifetime Original movie, “Killer Instinct: From the Files of Candice DeLong.”

DeLong has frequently appeared on television shows including, “Meet the Press,” “48 Hours,” “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” “MSNBC Investigates,” “CBS Evening News,” “TODAY,” “Good Morning America,” “CBS Early Show,” CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, Court TV, NBC and ABC.

DeLong’s appearance is taking place with support from the UNK Faculty Senate Artists and Lecturers Committee, the Office of the Dean of Natural and Social Sciences, the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Office of the Dean of Education, the Center for Teaching Excellence, eCampus, Women’s and Ethnic Studies, the Department of Psychology, the Psychology Club and the Department of Criminal Justice.
