The University of Nebraska at Kearney continues its recent steady climb in U.S.News’ “America’s Best Colleges” annual ranking. For the fourth consecutive year UNK is ranked highest among public universities in Nebraska in the Midwest Universities Master’s Category.
Overall, UNK is ranked 18th (up from 22 last year) among public colleges and universities in a 12-state region, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Its overall ranking in its category moved to 65, up from 69 last year.
Reflecting UNK’s commitment to providing the support and strong environment for learning for which it has become known, UNK’s freshmen retention rate (83 percent) is higher than any of our traditional (as defined by Nebraska’s Board of Regents) peer group campuses. It is a retention rate that rivals many of the best universities of any category in the nation.
The ideal class sizes and low student/faculty ratio of 17/1 at UNK are also major contributing factors to the strong retention rate.
“The U.S. News rankings report emphasizes factors of quality that are important to us, as well,” stated UNK Chancellor Doug Kristensen. “We understand that prospective students and their parents pay attention to these factors. We, too, are concerned about reputation for excellence, class sizes, strength of faculty and the other elements measured in this survey.”
This year’s America’s Best Colleges issue is available on newsstands beginning this weekend.
