Building Healthy Families: Kate Heelan using $2.5M grant to keep focus on kids

April 14, 2020 by gottulatm

View New Frontiers Research Magazine By JAN TREFFER THOMPSON Dr. Kate Heelan grew up eating right and staying active, became a high school athlete and earned a college soccer scholarship. When her own children started school, though, she realized why so many people have trouble staying healthy. “I saw my daughter, who’s very smart, being fed everywhere she went. She would get A's, she would get perfect attendance, and every reward she was given was a food reward,” … [Read more...] about Building Healthy Families: Kate Heelan using $2.5M grant to keep focus on kids

No more pull-ups; UNK prepares future PE teachers through active learning

February 21, 2019 by gottulatm

Associate professor Megan Adkins-Bollwitt, who chairs UNK’s health and physical education program, says fitness should be fun for PK-12 students so it translates to a lifetime of benefits. UNK’s program prepares students to be effective physical education instructors by introducing them to a variety of teaching methods and emphasizing hands-on training. (Photo by Corbey R. By TYLER ELLYSON UNK Communications KEARNEY – Forget pull-ups, rope-climbing and all the other stereotypes. Physical education is much different these days. It’s not a glorified recess where students establish their dominance during a game of dodgeball, and it’s far more than a set of drills that determine who can run the fastest and jump the highest. Today’s physical education classes focus on overall wellness, fitness concepts and healthy habits that can lead … [Read more...] about No more pull-ups; UNK prepares future PE teachers through active learning

Living Right: Todd Bartee finds niche in public health

February 4, 2019 by gottulatm

By TYLER ELLYSON UNK Communications Most exercise science research occurs in a controlled environment. Professors and students design a workout regime, find subjects to monitor, then track their improvements over time. This works for some tests, but what happens when participants are off their scheduled routine and back to their regular habits? How do you get people to increase their physical activity and eat better on their own? This is the type of question Todd … [Read more...] about Living Right: Todd Bartee finds niche in public health

By TYLER ELLYSON UNK Communications KEARNEY – Foster Field looked – and sounded – a lot like a carnival Friday afternoon. Elementary students laughed and smiled as they played with a giant parachute, tested their Spikeball skills, ran through an obstacle course and competed in beanbag tic-tac-toe. They were having fun while exercising, which is one of the goals of Nebraska Kids Fitness and Nutrition Day. The 15th annual event brought more than 800 fourth-graders … [Read more...] about More than 800 fourth-graders visit UNK to learn about fitness, nutrition
