By TYLER ELLYSON UNK Communications KEARNEY – The project started with a worn-out plastic gear that’s part of the automatic door operators found across the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus. This small component – about 3 1/2 inches in diameter – created a big problem for UNK Facilities Management and Planning when the manufacturer stopped selling the individual piece. “In order to replace it, you had to replace the entire operator. That was $800 to $1,000 … [Read more...] about Innovative idea: 3D-printing program saves UNK Facilities Management time, money

Kristy Kounovsky-Shafer: ‘Sometimes success is being able to do something no one else has done before’
Kristy Kounovsky-Shafer’s research is guided by a piece of advice she received as a doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For every question you answer, five more questions should arise. “That means you’re actually doing something interesting,” Kounovsky-Shafer said. “Because if you’re not doing something interesting, then you get no more questions out of the project.” This is how the associate chemistry professor approaches her research at the … [Read more...] about Kristy Kounovsky-Shafer: ‘Sometimes success is being able to do something no one else has done before’
Helping hands: UNK faculty making much-needed medical supplies
By TYLER ELLYSON UNK Communications KEARNEY – There are five 3D printers inside Kristy Kounovsky-Shafer’s research lab at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Typically, the associate chemistry professor and her students are using this equipment to create devices that concentrate DNA for genome sequencing and analysis. The past month, though, has been anything but typical. Instead of working in the lab, UNK students are finishing the semester through remote … [Read more...] about Helping hands: UNK faculty making much-needed medical supplies
UNK’s Abushamleh joins NU researchers to design 3D-printed prostheses
OMAHA – A team of University of Nebraska researchers hope a new grant will provide a solution for parents of children who need wearable prosthetics, but cannot afford them. The group includes Said Abushamleh, assistant professor of electrical engineering at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Abushamleh is a trained engineer and will work closely to design electronic components of the prostheses. Approximately 1,500 babies are born every year with upper-limb … [Read more...] about UNK’s Abushamleh joins NU researchers to design 3D-printed prostheses
