NU-Connect offers automated connection to secure Wi-Fi

Information Technology Services (ITS) implemented a new Wi-Fi access network named NU-Connect on the Kearney and Lincoln campuses Saturday.

NU-Connect provides an automated configuration for attaching laptops and most mobile devices to the secure and encrypted eduroam network.

The addition of NU-Connect is part of an effort by ITS to standardize the wireless experience for campus end users across Kearney, Lincoln and Omaha. The use of the NU-Connect SSID will be optional for the remainder of the Spring 2018 semester.

By the end of July, eduroam will replace UNOSecure & UNLAir-E as the only secure SSID at the University of Nebraska. ITS will maintain existing SSIDs through the end of the school year. ITS encourages the immediate use of NU-Connect and eduroam.

NU-Connect provides a single, self-service onboarding application to securely connect devices to eduroam, giving users a unified wireless experience regardless of campus location. After a user has connected to NU-Connect and the application has completed its process, they will be prompted to enter their credentials.

Eduroam, currently available on all campuses, is a secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. Eduroam gives students, researchers and staff from participating institutions internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions.

The implementation of NU-Connect is the first step in improving the wireless experience for campus users. The second phase of standardization will include general guest access via the SSID NU-Guest and registration of IoT devices such as Roku and Smart TVs.

The final phase will give users on all University of Nebraska campuses a simplified list of three SSID’s: NU-Connect, NU-Guest, and eduroam.

Information Technology Services understands change can be difficult, and that more will come as we work to simplify more than 20 SSID’s being used across our campuses to three standard networks.
