MY LOPER LIFE: Papez finally comfortable talking about ADHD

Rachel Papez“I was diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) when I was five years old. It’s not something I like to particularly bring up, but something that I’m finally comfortable talking about. I always felt ostracized from the other kids growing up. As a teen, it was embarrassing getting called down to the principal’s office every day to take my medication. It was also frustrating when I would sit at the table and try to solve one math problem for two hours. I would stay up till five in the morning because I had so much energy. It’s examples like these that molded me into the strong person I am today. I don’t resent the fact that I struggle with learning anymore. In fact, I embrace it. When one truly faces their problems head on, that’s when they can figure out a solution that works. I understand how to cope with this now and adjust it to fit my lifestyle. Nothing will get done if you just wish it. You must take action and advocate for yourself.”
