Communication Day includes student presentations, career panel, Forensics Showcase

KEARNEY – The Department of Communication at the University of Nebraska at Kearney is presenting its Communication Day Friday (April 24).

The second-year event, which is also presented by the communication honor society Lambda Pi Eta, takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Cedar Room of the Nebraskan Student Union.

“The Communication Day is an annual event aimed at showcasing what the Department of Communication has to offer,” said professor Fletcher Ziwoya. “It is also an opportunity to bring back alumni from the program and professionals from various organizations to interact with our students for inspiration and guidance in their academic career.”

Students from associate professor Amber Messersmith’s Organizational Communication class will present their academic service learning projects.

Each student approached a nonprofit organization in the community and offered to complete at least 30 service hours for them. This project included creating a business contract with the organization and a schedule of when projects were to be completed. Each student worked with different organizations in Kearney including United Way of the Kearney Area, The World Theatre, Museum of Nebraska Art and Kearney Animal Shelter.

Student presenters include: Dan Carlson, Grand Island; Randi Clark, North Platte; Brittani Clarson, Clarkson; Alicia Goodner, Kearney; Andrea Hesterman, Grand Island; Derek Hoffmann, Axtell; Kylee Johnson, Kearney; Cacia Lyon, Giltner; Jordan Myers, Lincoln; Davion Pearson, Las Vegas; CJ Schrier, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Connor Schulte, Kearney; Mark Seeba, Bellevue; and Adam Stauffer?, Shenandoah, Iowa.

Communication Day also includes a UNK Forensics Showcase, which features forensics team members performing their competition-ready speeches.

A group of panelists – Jamie Banzhaf from The Buckle, Josh Hanshaw from Kearney Area Children’s Museum and Celann LeGreca from marketing and public relations firm LaGreca Group – will discuss careers and opportunities in the field of communication.

The event is open to the public.
