Childress wins 2014 Technology Excellence Award

Andrea Childress has been presented the 2014 Technology Excellence Award given annually by Information Technology Services at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

The Technology Excellence Award recognizes exemplary performance of ITS staff who provide service to students, faculty and staff significantly above and beyond specific job responsibilities.

Childress was commended for her job performance, acceptance of responsibility, teamwork and accomplishments focusing on technology-related projects. She received a framed certificate of recognition and ,500.

Childress, director of systems and programming, joined UNK in 1994 as a programmer/analyst.

She has supported the UNK student information system for almost 20 years, and her knowledge and skills are highly respected within ITS, across the UNK campus and at the other University of Nebraska campuses, her nomination form read.

As the lead for the ITS Security team and more recently as the Information Security Officer, she guides many security steps taken to protect systems and data.

Childress played a critical role in implementation of the Student Information System in the 1990s, which included housing, degree audit, telephone registration and eventually web-accessible services.

“Her analytical ability allows her to easily grasp business processes within administrative offices, and her technical skills have evolved as platforms have changed,” her nomination form said.

As Director of Information Systems, she also has been responsible for Client Services (Helpdesk and Computer Store), Instructional Technology and Application Development.

She also was the project manager for the transition to 24-hour Helpdesk service and helped train new programmer/analysts at UNK”

“As a dedicated professional, she sets an example for other ITS staff and colleagues in other offices,” the nomination continued. “She is not afraid to take on new responsibilities, as her new role as Information Security Officer demonstrates, and she can cover for other staff members during their absences.”
