“The Orpheus Project” will be presented in two performances by University of Nebraska at Kearney students on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 10-11.

The performances, which are free and open to the public, will be held in the Fine Arts Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and again at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The students are in an opera workshop class this semester.

“The performance will consist of scenes from each of three operas in which UNK students created dialogue that ties the works and the source in mythology together,” said Dr. Sharon Campbell, production director and an assistant professor of music and performing arts. “The first two are serious interpretations of the myth, and the third is a farcical reinterpretation.”

The operas, all of which are based on the myth of Orpheus, are “L’orfeo” by Claudio Montevardi, “Orfeo ed Euridice” by Christoph Willibald Gluck and “Orpheus in the Underworld” by Jacques Offenbach.

According to Dr. Campbell, the source of inspiration for the UNK Opera Workshop students this year is the mythological character Orpheus. He is known for being the “greatest of all musicians” whose art can move mountains and trees, and whose singing can deliver him safely through the underworld and back again.

The student performers are listed below, alphabetically by hometown.
