The fight for cardiac health has received a boost thanks to the efforts of a sorority at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

The Delta Xi chapter of Alpha Phi raised $9,600 at the sorority’s second annual Red Dress Poker Tournament philanthropic event held recently.

All proceeds from the event benefited the Alpha Phi Foundation, which is dedicated to cardiac care and the prevention of heart disease, according to Kristyna Engdahl, Alpha Phi marketing chair. The foundation, through the Cardiac Care Award, grants $50,000 annually to outstanding research and educational programs in the support of cardiac health in communities around the nation.

The event was attended by nearly 250 poker competitors from both UNK and the general public. Hundreds of door prizes were awarded at the event, including a trip to Las Vegas for two, a barbecue grill, a flat screen television, an Xbox, Playstation, iPod and tickets to a Nebraska Cornhusker football game, among others.
