Learning how to find out about job opportunities from more than just the want ads is the subject of a Career Development Workshop set for 7 p.m. Monday, July 12, at the Kearney Public Library.

The University of Nebraska at Kearney and the Kearney Public Library will cosponsor the workshop titled More Than Just a Handshake and a Nametag. One in a series of career development workshops being held the second Monday of each month, the program is free and open to the public. Jackie Rosenlof, former UNK Career Services director, will be the workshop presenter.

“Job seekers interested in getting tips on how to put their best foot forward should consider coming to this workshop,” Rosenlof said. “Every new contact you make is a potential new friend or stepping stone in your profession.”

Rosenlof explained the main points of the workshop will include a discussion on how to go about networking and keeping a “little black book,” using techniques to memorize names and the keys to remembering people. Other subjects will include learning how important your name is in introductions and keeping things personal with handwritten notes in today’s technological world.

“I will also be covering how to ‘connect the dots,'” she said. “Networking is not just a tool but a way to climb the ladder.”
