Samuel Lopez, an assistant health and physical education professor at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, has been nominated by United States Representative Tom Osborne to attend the “Opportunities Conference 2003-Asian Pacific and Hispanic Americans: Building on America’s Promise”. It will be held on September 24th and 25th in Washington D.C., this event will bring together prominent Asian Pacific Americans and Hispanic Americans to discuss opportunities for immigrant populations. There will be workshops on limited English proficiency needs and participation in federal programs. The sessions will focus on education, small business development, economic empowerment, home ownership, and faith-based initiatives.

Lopez is attending this conference to address the need for immigrant students to be able to access financial aid. Lopez is the adviser for the Hispanic Student Association and the UNK intramural bowling team. He is very involved in the Kearney community and hopes to lift the barrier that keeps immigrant children from getting a college education.
