Music professors are set to take the stage for the fourth annual Concert-on-the-Platte Series at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.  The first concert will feature UNK faculty member Nathan Buckner performing a piano duet with Jonathan Sokasits of Hastings College on Monday, September 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.

Buckner and Sokasits are both associate professors in the Music and Performing Arts departments at their respective universities.   “We have similar interests in music composed for the piano, but curiously this is our first collaboration,” Buckner said.

Buckner and Sokasits will play a duet composed by Franz Schubert.  “The recital is devoted to music for one piano, but four-hands.  Schubert is a contemporary of Beethoven and historically was the most prolific composer of four-hand piano music,” Buckner said.  According to Buckner, they will play two of Schubert’s multi-movement sonatas.

Buckner holds performance degrees from The Juilliard School, Indiana University and the University of Maryland.  Jonathan holds performance degrees from the University of Wisconsin and served on the faculty of Ithaca College in New York State before moving to Nebraska.

Concert-on-the-Platte is an on-going series of seventeen recitals where UNK faculty members perform with guests the Music and Performing Arts department invites to campus.  “The series was formed to furnish our music majors with professional examples of classical recitals in different music media including vocal, instrumental and piano,” Buckner said.

Admission for the concert is free and open to the public.
