UNK-In its ninth consecutive year, the University of Nebraska at Kearney’s Christian Student Fellowship is planning a trip to Mexico during spring break to offer encouragement and relief to poor Mexican villages.
The group of 50 will travel nearly 1300 miles to Guerrero, Mexico, where they will help construct a church, offer first aid clinics and assist needy families with food, said Greg Sweeney, Christian Student Fellowship campus minister.
Christian Student Fellowship students will also lead worship services and evening Bible story times for the children in churches in the rural area. A team of students is also planning to host an area-wide “plaza,” an afternoon carnival for Mexican children.
The group will drive non-stop for 22 hours to Guerrero by van. They will stay in tents because Guerrero is an area with no accommodations, Sweeney said.
The total cost for the trip is about $10,000 and the students raised the entire amount in the past six months, Sweeney said. Nearly $4,000 will be used to purchase building materials for the construction projects. Area businesses and individuals are assisting in sponsoring the trip by donating food, clothing, transportation assistance, tents, toys and water. CSF is still accepting donations to purchase building supplies.
Students participating in the 2000 Mexico trip are listed by their hometowns.
